A bird’s eye view of a historical city: the Eye on Malaysia makes Melaka its new home.

The Eye on Malaysia opens its doors to visitors and tourists at its new permanent 4-acre home at the scenic mouth of the MelakaRiver with a host of brand-new world-class offerings after a successful tenure at LakeTitiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur.

MELAKA, 7 November 2008 (Friday): The Eye on Malaysia welcomed its first visitors to its new permanent home at the scenic mouth of the Melaka River that runs through the historic City of Melaka at a spectacular launch ceremony officiated by TYT Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil Bin Yaakob, State Governor of Melaka. The Eye’s move to Melaka marks the next phase in its development as a tourism icon. While it was largely a stand-alone attraction at Lake Titiwangsa, the Eye will now headline a comprehensive outdoor leisure park occupying 4 acres of prime reclaimed land on the Melaka coast.

Y.A.B. Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, Chief Minister of Melaka, said: “Melaka is pleased to welcome the Eye on Malaysia to our city. It is only fitting that Melaka becomes the Eye’s permanent home because we occupy a longstanding iconic status as one of Malaysia’s key tourist destinations. We are confident that the Eye will do as well, if not better, in Melaka. Having the Eye with us in Melaka signals further growth for the state as a tourism destination as we will no longer be solely defined as Malaysia’s historical city. Together with our newly acquired UNESCO World Heritage status, the Eye will help boost the influx of local and international tourists and visitors to Melaka.”

The Chief Minister’s remarks are echoed by Adam Yong Abdullah, CEO of Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd, who said: “Since its debut in January 2007 at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, the Eye’s popularity has far exceeded our initial modest expectations for it. We at Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd are confident that the popularity of the Eye will continue to grow at its new home at Muara Sungai Melaka.”

Mr Yong Abdullah added: “Although we had other options once the Eye’s run at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa finished, we were keen to keep the Eye in Malaysia to continue benefiting Malaysia’s tourism industry. Therefore, we were pleased when Kumpulan Melaka Berhad, the investment arm of the Melaka State Government, agreed to a joint venture to operate the Eye in Melaka.”

In keeping with its reputation for using the latest in cutting edge light and sound technology, Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd will launch a light-and-sound Waterscreen showcase in December 2008 to add an extra special dimension to the Eye experience at Melaka. With the width of 90 metres and height of 35 metres, this showcase comprises the world’s largest and most powerful high-tech water screens. Crafted from a screenplay showcasing a fluid series of dynamic Malaysian images, lighting effects and high-tech laser artistry, this nightly showcase will be accompanied by a world premiere musical soundtrack by Chong Lim, the internationally acclaimed Malaysian musical director known for his work for the stage and screen and with superstars such as Kylie Minogue.

The Malaysia International Space Adventure (MISA) will also be opening at the leisure park in February 2009. Mr Yong Abdullah said: “MISA has had an excellent reception from schools when it was at Putrajaya. This is because of the highly interactive and educational nature of its exhibits which gives visitors an authentic approximation of what Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, Malaysia’s first astronaut, underwent during his experience onboard a NASA space trip. The new location at Melaka will make it accessible to Malaysian and Singaporean schools and we are confident that MISA will continue to grow in popularity alongside the Eye. ”

While the light-and-sound Waterscreen showcase and MISA will be permanent attractions alongside the Eye, the Eye on Malaysia team also plan to bring in a series of world-class shows and interactive activities, many of which will be debuting in Malaysia or Southeast Asia for the first time. Mr Yong Abdullah said: “We feel that the Eye should constantly remain a fresh experience for visitors, be they first-timers or repeat visitors. We are committed to making the Eye a family-oriented leisure destination suitable for all ages and the shows and activities that we will be bringing in will reflect that.”

Visitors to the Eye will also be able to relax at either one of the two eateries planned for the park – having gourmet Guatemalan coffee and a comprehensive range of snacks at the largest Eye Café in Malaysia or enjoying a full meal at the Eye Seafood Restaurant where trained chefs will prepare the freshest seafood in a variety of delicious ways spanning Western and Malaysian cuisine.

Mr Yong Abdullah said: “Melaka is the ideal place for the Eye’s permanent home because of its strategic location. Being only an hour and a half’s drive from Kuala Lumpur and two hours from Singapore, Melaka places the Eye within easy reach of Malaysians as well as foreign tourists entering Southeast Asia using Singapore as a gateway hub. This is in line with our aim of attracting more Singaporeans and other international tourists to experience the Eye and, by extension, Malaysia. The Eye’s new home where the mouth of the river meets the Melaka coastline also means that we will also be able to cater to the passengers of the Cruise Ships that stop at Melaka. Indeed, with the Eye’s increased accessibility, we are expecting up to 700,000 visitors in its first year of operations here.”
